Quarter 1 Assessment Week

October 27- 31, 2013

ICA KG2

Dear Parents,

Quarter 1 is quickly coming to an end.  We have just a couple short weeks remaining in the quarter and it’s time to start preparing for our assessments.  We will be dedicating October 27th through October 31st to assessing the material your child has been learning during Quarter 1 in KG2.

In preparation for Assessment Week, we are asking you to help your child review:

  • Sight words (read upon sight without pictures): one, two, three, four, five, six, red, yellow, blue, I, a, my, go, the, cat, ran, on, sat, man, nap
  • Vocabulary words (students will be given a picture showing the word):  book, school, school bus, teacher, pencil, backpack, neck, shoulders, chest, toe, back, hips, knees, mother, father, brother, sister, grandma, grandpa,  front cover, back cover, title, first, second, third
  • Spelling words (assessed in a traditional test form): map, tap, cap, cat, fat, sat, pop, cop, mop, top
  • Reading (your child will read the 5 short, silly sentences without the pictures):
    • Fat cat sat on mat.
    • Fat cat sat on map.
    • Fat cat sat on mop.
    • Fat cat sat on cop.
    • Fat cat sat on Pat.
    • Recognizing and naming letters: A, a, C, c, F, f, O, o, P, p, T, t
    • Recognizing and naming letter sounds: a, c, f, m, o, p, s, and t.
    • Recognizing and naming numbers: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6.
    • Creating, recognizing, and extending patterns: AB pattern
    • 5 Senses:  understands that there are 5 senses that help us observe our world, name the body part associated with each sense (skin for touch, eyes for sight, ears for hearing, tongue for taste, nose for smell)
    • Living and Non-living:  understand that there are living things and non-living things.  Be able to sort items according to whether they are living or non-living (a teddy bear is non-living, a bear is living, a plant is living, toys are non-living, etc.)
    • Recognizing and naming colors:  red, blue, and yellow
    • Recognizing and naming shapes:  circle, square, rectangle, and oval

Your child will be assessed on handwriting based on the D’Nealian alphabet (letters A, a, C, c, F, f, O, o, P, p, T, t).  We will also be assessing your child’s comprehension skills by asking them to draw responses about stories we read in class.  You can help prepare your child for this by reading with him/her and asking questions about the story and/or having your child draw reactions and responses.

Remember, we are reviewing at school each day.   For best results, you can work with your child a little every night.  Your support at home helps make sure your child has a successful year at ICA!  You can contact your child’s teacher if you need any extra information.

A note about the spelling test…

The spelling test will be given on Sunday, October 27th. This will include the 10 spelling words listed on the previous page.  The test will be given in a traditional way, where the teacher simply says the spelling words out loud, and your child writes the sounds he/she hears.  No picture cards or letters will be shown.

A passing grade for the spelling test is 7/10.  If your child does not receive a grade of 7/10 or higher on October 27th, he/she will have a second chance to take the spelling test.  The date for this make-up test will be Wednesday, October 30th.

Thank you for all of your support at home!

The KG2 teachers: Ms. Maggie, Ms. Selena, Ms. Alia, Ms. Cassie, Ms. Angela, Ms. Jackie, Ms. Donna and Ms. Juliana.
